THINGS TO DO IN SKIBBEREEN AND THE LOCALITY:
We are just a short drive from Mizen Head Peninsula, Ireland’s most South westerly point, affectionately known as “The Teardrop of Ireland” and visit the Mizen Head Visitor Centre, taking in the Maritime Museum and Mizen Head Signal Station, with breath taking views out over the Atlantic Ocean. Vist the Planetarium in Schull.
Nearby Lough Hyne (pronounced Ine), is Ireland’s first marine nature reserve and Europe’s only inland salt water lake, making it one of the most studied marine sites in Europe.
If walking is your niche there are a number of local ring roads to enjoy with breathtaking views. If you wish to travel a little further “The Sheep’s Head Way, which has been awarded the European Destination of Excellence, is a must. You can take a boat trip from Glengarriff to Garnish Island awaits anyone with an interest in all that is beautiful about flowers and shrubs. This amazing display of tropical plants is made possible by the warm influence of the Gulf Stream.
Or you can take a boat trip out to Carbery’s Hundred Isle’s, trips can be arranged for you. For the angler, the River Ilen close by in Skibbereen is very popular for salmon Salmon & Sea Trout Fishing. Also if you choose any of the designated cycle routes in West Cork, we can arrange bicycle hire for you. If you are interested in local West Cork history, history going back to the Famine times of the 1840’s,the local Heritage Centre will be happy to assist you and also supply you with historical walks in and around Skibbereen town. For those of you seeking Genealogy information the Heritage Centre house the 1901 & 1911 census records.
